When my client picked up the phone today and I heard in her voice that her energy was so high, I immediately knew that something had happened. We had been talking about her taking this big step in her life for several weeks. It was often difficult and even painful for her just to talk about this. So it made sense that she was really excited to share the big news with me: she finally made the first step to transform her passion into a job. After taking some time to celebrate this, I asked the ritual first question: “what is the topic of our session today?”.
Her answer was priceless. She said, “can we just go on and celebrate this for the entire session?!”. It had been such a threshold for her, she just wanted to keep savoring the sweet taste of what was a victory a little longer. So, we did it. We celebrated her victory for the entire session.
There is no wonder why she wanted to do it. We are so hard on ourselves most of the time, beating ourselves up for the things we haven’t done right, for the goals we haven’t accomplished yet, for not being enough present for our partner, because positive parenting was not really the rule today, because we didn’t do our daily workout, for the dishes that are still in the sink … for pretty much everything.
So, when you get there, when you meet one of your goals or even when you just take the first step towards it, don’t forget to celebrate. Even if it seems small for others, if it was important for you, share it. You deserve it.
When was the last time you celebrated one of your victories? Why do or don’t you do it? Share with the herd!
